KiCad vs Altium: tool freedom or managed product workflow?
The real difference is not hobbyist versus professional. It is who owns the software, collaboration stack, and organizational process.

KiCad is free, open source, and available on Windows, macOS, and Linux[1] [3]. Altium documents an integrated environment covering schematics, PCB layout, simulation, analysis, documentation, and manufacturing files in a unified data model [4]. Its Windows desktop authoring environment extends connected collaboration and workflow through Altium 365 [5] [6]. Neither label tells you whether the system fits your team. The operating model does.
The decision at a glance
| Decision | KiCad | Altium |
|---|---|---|
| Software model | No recurring license required [1]; GPLv3-or-later source [2] | Purchased solution; Feature availability depends on the purchased solution [7] |
| Authoring OS | Windows, macOS, and Linux [3] | Windows 11 64-bit recommended; Windows 10 still supported but not recommended [5] |
| Collaboration | PCBWiki analysis: the team assembles version control, review, and release workflow | Altium 365 connects desktop authoring with browser sharing and stakeholder collaboration [6] |
| Migration | Native KiCad continuity | Dedicated KiCad importer exists [8]. PCBWiki analysis: validate imported work. |
Choose KiCad when optionality is load-bearing
Choose KiCad when cross-platform access, source availability, low fixed software cost, and locally controlled project continuity matter more than buying an integrated enterprise workflow. The team gets real freedom [2], but must supply process discipline rather than pretending freedom means no process.
Choose Altium when the system replaces organizational work
Choose Altium when its integrated authoring scope, browser review, managed workspace services, stakeholder sharing, and downstream product-development workflows replace enough coordination to justify purchased access[4] [6]. Do not buy a logo. Map the exact solution tier to required features because Altium says availability varies by purchased solution[7].
Migration is a validation program
Altium documents a KiCad importer [8]. PCBWiki analysis: treat that as a lower door sill, not a certificate for the converted house. Validate schematics, libraries, net classes, polygons, stackups, rules, variants, outputs, and revision history on a representative project before committing.
