Browser vs desktop PCB design: pick the operating model

The useful question is not where pixels render. It is how your team handles files, outages, access, review, updates, and manufacturing handoff.

EasyEDA Standard is one browser-first/hybrid example: its documentation covers schematic capture, PCB layout, source export, Gerbers, collaboration, and fab integration [1][2] [3]. That is not evidence about every EasyEDA edition. KiCad proves that a cross-platform desktop suite can be free and source-available[4] [5]. Altium shows the hybrid: Windows desktop authoring plus browser collaboration [6][7].

Offline is a test, not a checkbox

Offline behavior requires product-specific testing. A downloadable client does not prove libraries, licensing, collaboration, or manufacturing services survive disconnection. Likewise, a browser-first product can expose local exports and a desktop client; EasyEDA Standard is the documented example here[1]. Disconnect a representative project, keep working, reconnect, and verify the result.

Security follows the mechanism

No universal security winner exists. Browser systems concentrate identity, account, service, and sharing controls. Desktop systems add endpoint, plugin, local-file, update, and ad hoc collaboration risk. Map actual threat models, contractual controls, data residency, backups, and recovery instead of blessing a category.

Hybrid is not a cop-out

EasyEDA Standard documents both browser use and a desktop client [1]. Altium combines installed authoring with Altium 365 browser collaboration[7]. Use the boundary deliberately: author where the tool is strongest, review where stakeholders can participate, and preserve independent manufacturing and project artifacts.

Run a representative migration project

Before standardizing, move one real design through authoring, review, library updates, DRC, fabrication outputs, BOM, pick-and-place, backup, account recovery, offline work, and export/import. Purchased access and feature availability can vary by solution [8]; test the exact tier.
